Injury Prevention & Safety

About us

The Childhood Injury Prevention Program provides safety education and access to safety equipment to underserved, high-risk populations and communities throughout the Greater Bay Area. Through collaboration with the Pediatric Trauma Program, the Childhood Injury Prevention Program plays a key role in reducing unintentional injuries to Bay Area children.

Our bilingual staff address the leading mechanisms of injuries facing children with a number of education programs in communities across the region. We partner with local schools, public safety agencies, and family-serving organizations throughout the Bay Area to provide awareness and education on child passenger safetybike and pedestrian safetysafe sleep, and in-home safety.

We are a part of the larger Government Relations, Community Relations, and Volunteer Services at Stanford Children’s, which provides equitable services and programming where people live, work, and play.

Our programs

Through various programs we provide ongoing injury prevention education and resources to community members and internal staff.

Car seat education

The car seat education classes are being offered to ensure that families expecting a new addition to their family and are delivering either at our hospital, or one of the many hospitals in the Bay Area, are able to receive Child Passenger Safety education from Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford's experienced staff.

Safety Fund

  • The Safety Fund provides patient families with education and essential safety supplies
  • Through this fund, we meet the needs of families experiencing financial hardship and families with low birthweight infants or special needs children

Injury Prevention Campaigns

We engage staff internally to promote safety in patient units.

  • Our trainings align with national safety awareness months
  • We hold in-hospital trainings with key staff and provide in-person education
  • We post safety information via website and social media communications
  • We distribute an internal newsletter and free safety supplies to patient families

Community Capacity Building

Our goal is to increase the number of Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPST) in the community. This includes:

  • Offering a Child Passenger Safety Technician Course
  • Having 3 on-staff CPST-Instructors
  • Training hospital staff and clinicians
  • Working with first responders and law enforcement, the Public Health Department, and child serving community-based organizations
