Advice Nurse Triage

If you need to reach us outside of normal business hours, our on-call advice service provides phone advice or urgent care referrals. When your child needs medical help after hours, the nurse advisor will help you decide if your child needs home care, if he or she needs to be seen by a physician that night, or if he or she can be seen the next day. One of our pediatricians is always available for emergency care when the office is closed. Please call our office phone numbers if you need urgent medical advice. Phone assistance is available 24 hours a day.

In a life-threatening emergency, you should go immediately to the nearest emergency room or call 911.

After-Hours Virtual Care

While your primary care office should be your first choice for in-person or virtual care, After-Hours Virtual Care is a convenient way to speak with a Stanford Medicine Children’s Health pediatrician outside of normal business hours. Our virtual visits are the quickest and most secure way to see a Stanford pediatrician. With After-Hours Virtual Care, you can schedule same-day and weekend appointments and receive the highest-quality medical advice without waiting for a next-day appointment.

Our vaccine philosophy

Our practice believes that all children should receive the recommended vaccines according to the guidelines provided by the AAP and the CDC. Vaccines are safe and effective in preventing diseases and health complications in children and young adults. Regular vaccinations help children ward off infections and they are administered as one of the safest and best methods of disease prevention. We are happy to discuss your concerns about vaccines at your child’s next visit. Safety facts on vaccines from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Immunizations

We follow the immunization guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Detailed information sheets are published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Recommended Immunization Schedule

Product recalls

Child products, such as cribs and toys, are often recalled due to a defect or hazard. It’s important to pay close attention to recalled consumer goods to protect your child from dangerous items. View more information at the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Car seat recommendations

As a parent, it is your job to protect your child when riding in a vehicle. Using car seats properly helps keep children safe. But with so many different types of car seats on the market, understanding how to use them correctly can be overwhelming for parents. Visit the AAP Car Seat Safety Information page for guidance on choosing the most appropriate car safety seat for your child. We offer a class on the proper use of rear-facing car seats.

Traveling with children

Traveling with children requires special planning and preparation, especially when traveling abroad. There are many things parents should consider when traveling with children of any age. Visit the CDC’s Traveling with Children web page for helpful resources on travel.

Integrative medicine is defined as relationship-centered care that focuses on the whole person; is informed by evidence; and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, health care professionals, and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing, including conventional, complementary, and alternative medical modalities.

Conditions that can be treated using an integrative approach:

What to expect

New or existing patients who would like to explore an integrative approach should speak with their pediatrician to specify a referral to Carrie Kaufmann, RN, MSN, BC PNP. An intake questionnaire can be mailed directly to you to complete for your child/adolescent or be sent through MyChart. All questionnaires must be returned at least one week prior to your scheduled appointment or the appointment will need to be rescheduled at a later date.

An initial 60-minute consultation with the patient and family member will cover all aspects of a patient’s health and lifestyle, including:

  • Diet/nutrition
  • Sleep
  • Physical activity
  • Social interactions
  • Sources of stress
  • Symptoms of condition and triggers
  • Current medications, previous tests, procedures, and lab work
  • Supplements or herbal remedy usage
  • Previous experience with integrative medicine

We will then discuss the patient’s goals for integrative medicine treatment and develop a comprehensive treatment plan, which will also be available to the patient’s current pediatrician via Epic. Depending on each patient’s needs, treatment options can include therapies related to nutrition, sleep, exercise, mind-body connection, a child’s physical environment, relationships, spirituality, and other modalities.

Also, if you are planning to become or are currently pregnant and would like to schedule an IM prenatal consult, this can be arranged by calling our front desk at (408) 356-1319 and specifying this type of consult.

Mental Health and Wellbeing - Pediatric Integrative Medicine

Interest in the field of pediatric integrative medicine is driven by the following:

  • The prevalence of children living with chronic illness.
  • The desire to reduce the frequency and duration of pediatric prescription medication use due to side effects.
  • Parental experience with complementary and alternative medicine.
  • Parental perception of whether or not medications are helping.
  • The need for more effective approaches to preventive health in children.

Integrative medicine at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health

The integrative medicine consult practice at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health takes a holistic approach to serving pediatric patients from birth through young adulthood. The model of care offers a blending of conventional medicine with evidence-based complementary therapies to enhance the well-being of each child—mind, body, and spirit. It embraces preventive health care and the management of acute and chronic issues, all the while believing in a child’s innate healing capabilities. Active listening along with education is an integral part of each and every patient encounter, with the hope of inspiring each child to listen for his or her own heart’s song.
